Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between weak social and cultural infrastructures and the widening of social and cultural gaps across different areas of Qeshm Island. This applied, descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional study was conducted among adult permanent residents of urban and rural areas of Qeshm Island. A total of 384 participants were selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire designed to assess weakness in social and cultural infrastructures and perceived social and cultural gaps. The items were scored on a five-point Likert scale. Content validity was evaluated by experts, construct validity was examined through confirmatory factor analysis, and the overall reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.89. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 24 through Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression, and structural equation modeling. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between weak social and cultural infrastructures and wider social and cultural gaps (r=0.58, p<0.001). Linear regression indicated that infrastructural weakness significantly predicted social and cultural gaps (β=0.55, t=11.42, p<0.001) and explained 31% of their variance (R²=0.31). Structural equation modeling further confirmed this relationship, with a significant standardized path coefficient of 0.32 (t=6.45, p<0.001). The model demonstrated satisfactory fit, with χ²/df=2.14, CFI=0.94, GFI=0.92, and RMSEA=0.048. The findings indicate that weak and unevenly distributed social and cultural infrastructures are significantly associated with wider social and cultural gaps across Qeshm Island. More equitable provision of educational and healthcare services, cultural facilities, and opportunities for social and cultural participation may therefore contribute to reducing regional disparities and strengthening social and cultural cohesion.
