This study aimed to identify and conceptualize the dimensions, components, and indicators of AI-based coaching at the Islamic Azad University, Mazandaran Province. The research was applied in purpose and qualitative in nature, employing a grounded theory approach based on Strauss and Corbin’s model. Seventeen experts in higher education, artificial intelligence, educational technologies, and academic management were selected through purposive and snowball sampling until theoretical saturation was reached. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding with MAXQDA software. Validity and reliability were confirmed through established qualitative criteria and complementary quantitative indices . The analysis resulted in 30 indicators categorized into 10 components and 5 overarching dimensions: “intelligent diagnosis and assessment,” “adaptive guidance and content generation,” “predictive and targeted recommendation,” “progress monitoring and reflection,” and “integration and collaboration.” The findings indicate a comprehensive, data-driven, and adaptive coaching system capable of advanced diagnostic analysis, real-time feedback, personalized learning pathways, predictive intervention, and facilitation of academic collaboration. AI-based coaching represents an innovative framework that can enhance the development of research competencies through intelligent, personalized, and continuous support, ultimately improving research quality and fostering skilled researchers in higher education.
